Congratulations, you made it through the holidays and what will probably be the biggest winter event of the season!  Although there is still the potential for plenty of winter weather, when we reach the shortest month of the year it always feels like spring is just around the corner.  And yes, I am one who starts avidly watching for signs of the emerging season at the beginning of February, even if the thermometer stubbornly remains below freezing…and no matter what a certain oversized rodent “predicts.”

We’ve got an eclectic mix of staff recommendations this month, so stroll on in and select whatever strikes your fancy!  Like the promise of a new spring, the library is full of amazing possibilities.  And don’t forget about our ongoing displays: Black History Month on the first floor, and 2021 Award Winners and Fiction of the Middle Ages on the second floor.  On February 15th our 1920s Glitz and Glamour display will be replaced with a Family Sagas collection, so be sure to grab some of those Roaring 20s items before they return to their homes on the shelf!

In honor of “spunky old broads” everywhere, Mary starts us off with a favorite movie that has stood the test of time, just like Grandma: Steel Magnolias (DVD FIC Ste), first released to theaters in 1989.  In a twist on the dark comedy Arsenic and Old Lace (DVD FIC Ars), a group of genteel Southern ladies plots a murderous revenge for one of their own in The Tea-Olive Birdwatching Society (LP FIC TRO, also available as an e-book on Hoopla).

Would you prefer some calm, quiet reflection over beautiful words and the soothing pattern of verse?  Shelbi recommends The Essential Rumi (891 Jal).  Or are you in the mood for action?  Dennis recommends No Time to Die (DVD FIC No), the latest James Bond installment, and the final portrayal of this iconic character by British actor Daniel Craig.  Do you love gaming and the incredible artistry of graphic novels?  Rachel recommends The Adventure Zone series (GN FIC McE), which are based on the podcast of the same name.

Our Local History Specialist Dellie has a slate of inspirational and historical fiction suggestions if that style is more to your liking.  A woman who, as a poor and orphaned child, was forced to relocate to Canada from the United Kingdom must come to terms with her past in Carrie Turansky’s No Journey Too Far (LP FIC TUR, also available as an e-audiobook on Hoopla).  Have you always wanted to experience life in the California Gold Rush era?  Try The Gold in These Hills by Joanne Bischof (LP FIC BIS and FIC Bis, also an e-book and e-audiobook on both Libby and Hoopla).  Craving a little suspense tinged with romance and some family drama thrown in the mix?  How about Legacy by Nora Roberts (FIC Rob and LP FIC ROB)?  A mother and daughter are trying to start over and mend their relationship in a new city, but the drama just won’t leave them alone in Arcadia Falls by Carol Goodman (LP FIC GOO).

Does any of the above sound interesting?  If so, come on in and pick up a copy from our staff picks display on the 1st floor.  And our friendly staff are always happy to make suggestions for you.  You can also request your personalized recommendation list at www.cdpl.lib.in.us/book-match.  Whatever authors, genres, or formats you like, you can find them here at your local public library.
