Many songbirds you may already know, especially if you stock your bird feeders. Maybe you even participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count with other citizen scientists and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in February. Or perhaps you know a few birds but would like to learn more about species common to our backyards. CDPL will be offering an educational program on \u201cBackyard Songbirds of Indiana\u201d<\/a> for session three of the Library Naturalist series. Join us to learn about birds that frequent the Midwest, their physical characteristics, and their melodious songs. We will learn how to identify birds based on sight and\/or sound. ID checklists will also be provided to patrons to take home, as well as an inclusive species checklist for birds of Indiana.<\/span><\/p>

After the program, be sure to visit the second floor for all your birding needs. Two books that are sure to be a premium selection are \u201cMidwestern Birds: Backyard Guide\u201d by Bill Thompson (<\/span>598.072 Tho) and \u201cBirds of Indiana\u201d by Stan Tekiela (598 Tek). There is also the \u201cAtlas of Breeding Birds of Indiana\u201d by John Castrale (598.2977 Cas) and \u201cThe Birds of Indiana\u201d by Russell Mumford (598.29772 Mum).<\/span><\/p>

Don\u2019t forget about the \u201cNational Geographic Backyard Guide to Birds of North America\u201d by Jonathan Alderfer (598.097 Ald) or even \u201cThe Backyard Birdwatchers Bible\u201d by Christopher Perrins (598.0723 Per). If you are interested in particular types of birds, you should check \u201cNorth American Wading Birds\u201d by John Netherton (598.34 Net) or \u201cInstant Guide to Freshwater Birds\u201d by Mike Lambert (598.2924 Lam). If you would like to learn more about birds of prey, check out \u201cNorth American Birds of Prey\u201d by Scott Weidensal (598.91 Wei), \u201cRaptors: Birds of Prey\u201d by John Hendrickson (598.91 Hen) or \u201cCranes\u201d by Janice Hughes (598.32 Hug). We also have the Bluebird Book by Donald Stokes (598.842 Sto).<\/span><\/p>

If you prefer to study the behavior and characteristics of certain birds, look into \u201cThe Princeton Encyclopedia of Birds\u201d (598 Pri) or \u201cThe Lives of Birds: Birds of the World and Their Behavior\u201d by Lester Short (598.251 Sho). For more details on serious birding, check out \u201cBirding Basics\u201d by Noah Strycker (598.072 Str), \u201cNational Geographic Birding Essentials\u201d by Jonathan Alderfer (598.07234 Ald), or \u201cA Field Guide to Advanced Birding\u201d by Kenn Kaufman (598 Kau).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
