The overarching theme for 2025 is \u201cAfrican Americans and Labor\u201d, which centers on the profound ways in which African Americans&#8217; experiences are historically interconnected with various types of work and working \u2013 free and unfree, skilled and unskilled, vocational and voluntary, visible and invisible (Dr. Kaye Whitehead). This intersection between the lives of Black people and their historical connection with labor is at the center of CDPL\u2019s display honoring the contributions of Black Americans to our Nation. History and education intersect in Noliwe Rooks\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cdpl.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=1.1033.0.0.1&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=A%20Passionate%20Mind%20in%20Relentless%20Pursuit:%20The%20Vision%20of%20Mary%20McLeod%20Bethune&amp;by=KW&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=*&amp;query=&amp;page=0&amp;searchid=2\">A Passionate Mind in Relentless Pursuit: The Vision of Mary McLeod Bethune<\/a>\u201d (370.92 Rooks). Rooks shares the life and legacy of a visionary leader whose painful path toward education led to a university that bears her name to this day. Bethune is the only African American leader whose statue stands in the rotunda, the \u201csymbolic and physical heart\u201d of the US Capitol.<\/p><p>Black people\u2019s perspectives are present and documented in various professional fields. Rachel J. Banneker, an African American mathematician, writer of almanacs, and one of the greatest astronomers of his generation, was hired by Thomas Jefferson to help survey Washington D.C. in 1791. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cdpl.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=1.1033.0.0.1&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=Bird%20Brother:%20A%20Falconer%27s%20Journey%20and%20the%20Healing%20Power%20of%20Wildlife&amp;by=KW&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=*&amp;query=&amp;page=0&amp;searchid=4\">Bird Brother: A Falconer&#8217;s Journey and the Healing Power of Wildlife<\/a>\u201d (921 Stotts, R.) shares Rodney Stotts&#8217;s extraordinary journey to becoming a conservationist and one of America\u2019s few Black master falconers. From pulling trash from the Anacostia River to reintroducing bald eagles to the region, Stotts takes readers through the joys and challenges of achieving his dream. Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cdpl.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=1.1033.0.0.1&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=The%20Disordered%20Cosmos:%20A%20Journey%20into%20Dark%20Matter,%20Spacetime,%20and%20Dreams%20Deferred&amp;by=KW&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=*&amp;query=&amp;page=0&amp;searchid=5\">The Disordered Cosmos: A Journey into Dark Matter, Spacetime, and Dreams Deferred<\/a>\u201d (523.01 Pre) shares her love for Physics with a tone and rhythm infused by pop culture and politics. Wilson\u2019s plays include \u201cFences\u201d (1987), winner of a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, which was adapted into a film with the same title starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis (DVD FIC Fen).<\/p><p>\u00a0In the Culinary Arts, we hold a plethora of materials in our collection that highlight the various talents of African American chefs and cooks\u2019 creations with a dash of History. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cdpl.polarislibrary.com\/search\/searchresults.aspx?ctx=1.1033.0.0.1&amp;type=Keyword&amp;term=Black%20Food:%20Stories,%20Art,%20and%20Essays&amp;by=KW&amp;sort=RELEVANCE&amp;limit=TOM=*&amp;query=&amp;page=0&amp;searchid=13\">Black Food: Stories, Art, and Essays<\/a>\u201d (641.592 Bla) explores the role of food and Black people\u2019s foodways within the US and around the world.
