Through your library card, you have free access to Transparent Language<\/a>, a website for learning any of dozens of offered languages at your convenience! However, you don\u2019t have to learn a new language to explore the works of international authors. We have English translations!<\/p>

If you want to browse this category, you\u2019ll have to use the advanced search options in our online catalog<\/a>. Search for \u201ctranslat*\u201d in the author search field OR the subject field. The asterisk* is a wildcard. It will bring up matches for \u201ctranslated\u201d, \u201ctranslator\u201d, and other variations on the root. Using the operator OR finds the broadest spread of results, including every item with \u201ctranslat*\u201d in the author section of the description, the subject section, or both.<\/p>

Why use the catalog instead of browsing the shelves? Most English translations are intermingled with the rest of the collection, with a few exceptions.<\/p>

We have classic works of literature from around the world in the 800s section of our nonfiction collection, like \u201cIf not, winter: fragments of Sappho<\/a>\u201d, translated from Greek by Anne Carson (884.01 Sap), and \u201cThe essential Rumi<\/a>\u201d, translated from Farsi by Coleman Barks (891 Jal). Under the Dewey Decimal System, these works are organized geographically.<\/p>

Our international films are in their own section, grouped by the films\u2019 original languages. To be understood by audiences in other countries, some of these movies, like \u201cAme\u0301lie<\/a>\u201d (DVD FL-FRE Ame), use translated subtitles, while others, like \u201cTrain to Busan<\/a>\u201d (DVD FL-FRE Ame),\u00a0 completely re-record the audio in the audience\u2019s language. Our anime collection on the next shelf over is similar in this respect. Most of these animated shows and movies were originally in Japanese, then subtitled or dubbed in English.<\/p>

One of the most popular genres of our international literature is manga, or Japanese graphic novels. We have manga for younger audiences like \u201cSailor Moon<\/a>\u201d (YA GN FIC Takeuchi) in our youth graphic novel section downstairs, as well as titles like \u201cAttack on Titan<\/a>\u201d (GN FIC Isa) with our adult graphic novels on the second floor. Not your thing? We have everything from murder mysteries to crochet patterns from all over the world!<\/p>
