Visit the library to find materials to guide you to a well-deserved break without emptying your pockets.
Eyewitness Books is a series published by Dorling Kindersley (DK Books) that has grown since its conception in the late 1900s to include thoughtful travel guides. These books are known for including color images, clear and specific information, and useful visual aids, like maps. “Unforgettable Journeys: The Americas” (917.04 Unforgettable) is a beautiful, full-color example for busy adults who like to plan. It is designed so that you may strategically plan your domestic vacation around your preferred mode of transportation. Looking to travel to a culturally rich destination without breaking the bank? Consider visiting our southern neighbors with DK’s “Mexico” (917.204 Mexico 2024).
The Lonely Planet series is another great option when planning a worthy vacation. They are known for providing in-depth insights and practical information about local culture and travel logistics worldwide. “The Travel Hack Handbook” (910.202 Blindloss) will help you plan a wonderful trip within your travel budget without sacrificing fun. It has a thoughtful section written by a world traveler about preparing for the unthinkable and other things to consider when planning a safe trip. “Offbeat North America” (917.04542 Nelson) will guide you to 100 amazing places within our borders that are away from the usual tourists’ stops. In addition to full-size color images and maps, it has an easy-to-understand list for each destination that highlights the types of things you can see and do.
The Lonely Planet series is also ecologically mindful. Their books are printed on paper from responsible sources and are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which promotes paper standards that are environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable. “Electric Vehicle Road Trip USA & Canada” (917.3 Lonely) is a prime example of their respectful mission. If you have an electric vehicle, this guides you to recharging stations along the way to popular destinations, on top of their usual travel advice.
Adventure seekers and adrenaline junkies who are looking for a more personal challenge can “Drive & Hike Appalachian Trail” (917.4 Mal). Author and longtime city dweller, Timothy Malcolm, fell in love with the diversity of the Appalachian Trail after his first visit, and he wants to encourage you to also fall in love with this historical path. The trails are full of friendly nature lovers ready for a quick chat, and breathtaking views high above land that once accommodated civil war camps and battlegrounds.
Looking for a more relaxing getaway? Submerge yourself in the island life while enjoying pink sandy beaches and sea glass colored waters. Begin planning your trip with “Fodor’s Travel Bermuda” (917.29904 Bardgett). This recently published guide has up-to-date information about pricing, lodging, and entertainment. It also includes phone numbers and website addresses to easily book tours for some of the most fascinating natural and man-made locations.
No time to travel this year? Get lost in “The Race to Alaska” (DVD 797.1 Rac) for 98 minutes, or take “Historic Walks” (DVD 917.304 His) through New York, Philadelphia, Hollywood, and Washington D.C. Looking to do a little more than watch? Pick up a Great Courses’ bundle and visit “Notorious London: A City Tour” (Great Courses 914.21 Not). We have something for everyone.
