The Crawfordsville District Public Library is celebrating National Library Card Sign-Up Month. It’s the perfect time to sign up for or renew your library card. Check out a favorite story or try something new. No matter what your tastes are, a library card hits all the right notes!
How do you get a library card? It’s simple. Bring a photo ID that contains your current address and a piece of official mail to serve as proof of residency. If you reside or own property in Union Township, your card is free of charge, as a portion of your tax dollars is used to help fund our collections, services, and programs. Students in a school located within the taxing district may also obtain a Courtesy Card free of charge. If you are not a resident in our service area, you still have options to get a library card with us by applying for the “Reciprocal Borrower” or “Non-Resident” cards. If you already have an Evergreen Indiana card, you can use your up-to-date card to check out materials in-person or request items from any participating library in the consortium, including us!
There are so many reason to have a library card. With your CDPL Evergreen card, you have access to over 100 thousand items in-house as well as a growing collection of over 8 million items from various libraries across Indiana. We offer all the latest bestsellers, plus we have several other unique items in our collection, too! We have several board games available for checkout from our Library of Things. We also have a special “A.rt R.esources T.ransfer” collection. It is fully sponsored by a nonprofit organization of the same name that is committed to publicizing artists’ voices while ensuring access to art and literacy publications. Your library card also gives you access to several different digital collections for audiobooks and e-books, online tutorials for arts and crafts, and access to multiple research platforms, such as Ancestry.
But wait! We have so much more to offer. The library offers regularly scheduled programs every month. You can find all the info on our website’s calendar, or by picking up a paper calendar at your next visit. You can drop in on Monday afternoons to visit Chess Club, a casual club for all ages, or get your day started on the 2nd or 4th Thursday with Yarnworks, a social club for textile artists.
Beyond our monthly clubs, we offer special events, opportunities to learn more about a number of subjects, and multiple reading programs each year. We collaborative with other organizations, businesses, and universities. Currently, we are working with Indiana and Purdue Universities, Franciscan Health, and Area IV Agency on Aging to bring you the best opportunities.
You can refresh your creativity and recharge your mind in our upcoming Creative Aging (55+) Workshop. Share your art and meet like-minded people 55 years and older in your community. This event will be on Wednesday, September 23, beginning at 10:30 am in Meeting Room A. Registration is required for this event. You are invited to visit Purdue’s APARC van in the parking lot at CDPL on September 25 anytime between 10 am and 4:30 pm to receive a free hearing assessment. No appointment is needed. Assessments take 5 minutes and follow-up appointments for the October 2 clinic can will be scheduled as needed. All ages are welcome. This service is free and sponsored by Purdue’s Accessible Precision Audiology Research Center and CDPL.
The Empowered Caregiver is an upcoming 5-week series for adults happening every Wednesday at 6 pm from September 2 – September 30 in partnership with Area IV Agency on Aging. Gain valuable information on how to navigate the responsibilities of caring for someone living with dementia. Topics include: Building Foundations of Caregiving, Supporting Independence, Communicating Effectively, responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors, and Exploring Care and Supportive Services.
We also have an abundance of Youth Services programs and activities for children and teens. For more information about these events, please contact the Youth Services department at 765-362-2242, ext. 2 or visit our Children’s Area on the first floor of the library.
