Curious about snakes, lizards, and other fascinating exotic animals? Join us for our exciting and educational Scaly Safari at the library on Saturday, July 19, from 10-11 am. A herp hobbyist will bring and introduce you to a variety of scaly creatures. You will have an opportunity to see, and maybe even touch, a snake and other reptiles. This event is perfect for animal lovers of all ages who want to learn more about the care, behavior, and habitats of these pets. Whether you’re thinking of adopting an exotic pet or just want to learn more, this program will be fun for the whole family. Registration is not required; just meet us in the Donnelley Room in the lower level of the library.
Until then, why not dive into a book about snakes? “The New Encyclopedia of Snakes” (639.39 Mat) has everything you need to know about the species including classification, morphology, how and where snakes live, and much more. If you are interested in keeping a snake as a pet, “Snakes” by John Coborn (j 639.396 Cob), found in our children’s collection, discusses the health and behavior of snakes and also provides information on keeping them as pets.
Do other scaly creatures pique your interest? The library offers a variety of books on reptiles, such as “Firefly Encyclopedia of Reptiles and Amphibians” (597.9 Fir). This encyclopedia provides information on amphibians and reptiles, from miniature tree frogs to anacondas and everything in between. For the younger readers, “Reptiles” by Simon Holland (j 597.9 Hol) from our children’s collection explores the world of reptiles, discussing lizards, snakes, tortoises, and more. A great general reference for information on keeping reptiles as pets is “Firefly Encyclopedia of the Vivarium” (639.39 Ald). This book delves into how to set-up and maintain reptile vivariums, which are the enclosures where they live, as well as information on feeding, breeding, and health matters.
These titles and more can be checked out with your library card. There are also many informational books about reptiles available digitally on our free Libby app. If you have questions about our Scaly Safari, give us a call at 765-362-2242, ext. 3. The library’s regular open hours are Monday-Thursday 9 A.M. – 9 P.M., Friday-Saturday 9 A.M. – 5 P.M., and Sunday 1-5 P.M.
