August is National Wellness Month and the Crawfordsville District Public Library invites you to stop by the second floor to see our “Wellness and Self-Care” display. Wellness is about more than just physical health. Wellness also includes mental, financial, and spiritual health, just to name a few. If you find yourself in need of a little self-care, take a moment to explore what we have available that might bring a little calm into your life.
“Real Self-Care” by Pooja Lakshmin, MD (613 Lak) tells us that self-care isn’t about buying things to make us happy or signing up for a class. Rather, it’s an internal self-reflective process. Lakshmin explains that self-care is a way to be, not comparing yourself to others online or doing superficial things to feel good. She uses a down-to-earth style to provide a step-by-step program that makes practical changes in your life. Learn how to set boundaries, deal with problems, and show yourself some real self-compassion.
If you feel like technology is overtaking your time and need help stepping back, do yourself a huge favor and check out “Tech Life Balance: 101 Ways to Thrive in a Digital World” by Taino Bendz (303.483 Bendz). This book takes a very practical approach to curbing your use of “Attention-Grabbing Technology.” As the title suggests, the author gives 101 ways to make this happen, and each method has a difficulty level of 1, 2, or 3, with 1 being the easiest. This format makes it simple to take concrete steps towards a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.
Want to improve your body’s overall health in a simple, straight-forward way? “Sleep Drink Breathe: Simple Daily Habits for Profound Long-Term Health” by Michael Breus, PhD (613.7 Breus) explores the science behind these three basic functions of life. Dr. Breus presents a three-week program to help readers make small adjustments to feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Not all of the materials on this display are books! For patrons interested in meditation, there are many excellent CDs and DVDs to choose from as well, such as, “Positive Morning Affirmations” from the Grow Within series (DVD 158.12 Positive). We even have various courses available that come with a DVD and a book, such as “Practicing Mindfulness: An Introduction to Meditation” presented by Professor Mark W. Muesse of Rhodes College (Great Courses 158.12 Pra).
These titles and several others are currently on display through the end of August. Take this time to prioritize your health and wellness with the help of some of our resources.
